What Does Speech Therapy Actually Look Like for Young Children?

A lot of parents aren’t totally sure what speech therapy looks like.

It’s usually not sitting at a table repeating words over and over.

With younger kids, it often looks more like play, but there’s still a lot of structure behind it.

We might be:

  • doing a quick craft and building in specific words or sounds

  • using movement (throwing, racing, taking turns) to keep things going

  • practicing the same word or phrase in a simple, repeatable way

It’s meant to feel engaging, but also predictable enough that kids can actually practice and improve.

For some kids, we’re working on clearer speech.
For others, it’s putting words together or expressing ideas more easily.

A lot of progress comes from small moments repeated throughout the session, not long drills.

It may not always look like “traditional” practice, but there’s a reason behind what we’re doing.
